A Study of Interactional Metadiscourse Features in Chinese University Students' Prepared English Speech

Speech is an activity in which speakers convey their message to listeners continuously. A coherent, logical argument must be made by the speaker, and audience participation essential for a successful speech. The majority of prior research on English Public Speaking (hence referred as EPS) from Critical Discourse Analysis (hereinafter CDA) perspective focused political or academic Although speech language learners (also known EFLs) has caught interest academics. There not been much study interactional metadiscourse characteristics EFLs' EPS. In this study, we investigate how usage influences speakers' performance ways presenters engage with listeners. We do drawing Hyland's stance engagement framework 2005. Based corpus 90 prepared scripts high-scoring low-scoring groups, results suggest that explicit mentions oneself are most frequent elements, whereas markers employed more frequently than listener markers. Additionally, found positive correlation between hedges scores marginally negative use self-mentions. terms technique, analysis investigating EPS provided while pedagogy, it emphasizes significance instruction.
